...will soon be a lede in some QC paper somewhere. Why? Because the Anaheim Ducks have just put Schneider on waivers.
What does this mean for Flames fans? Well, either Burke didn't try very hard to trade the $5 million d-man or...there simply is no market for "salary dumps". Even for guys that are still kinda useful like Schneider.
If the second premise is the accurate one, Warrener, Eriksson and, yes, even Aucoin, are all pretty much untradable. Meaning at least one of them (if not two) will be taking a long, humiliating flight south this October.
Add that to Nilson's defection and you'll notice that three quarters of the "salary problems" of this off-season were acquired or signed just last off-season (4/5ths if you include Wayne Primeau in that group). Hmmmm...

I'd imagine Burke put forth a good effort; I mean, he's known this had to happen since before July when Scott Niedermayer made his intentions known.
But that's a drawback to dealing from a position of obvious necessity, plus the complexity that the Ducks couldn't take on any salary in a Schneider deal.
Schneider was very useful, and some team will be glad to find him in their stocking on Christmas morning, but the Ducks have enough blueline dollars and minutes committed to Niedermayer-Pronger.
Still, it's tough to know how much of this waiver move to attribute to nobody liking Brian Burke. Maybe Sutter's a more popular guy?
Maybe Sutter's a more popular guy?
Probably only because Burke is so unpopular: Sutter doesn't strike me as easy to get along with. In addition, none of our anchors are anywhere near as useful as Schneider.
wtf, no team picked him up?
what are the snows and waddells of the world up to?
looks like our defence anchors is here forever.
It's incredible to me that no one would take Schneider. Hell, if the Flames weren't burdened with Aucoin et al, I would hope Calgary would take a shot.
Nobody is picking him up because if they do then Burke has money to sign selanne, making anaheim, a team in L.A's division better. As long as he's stuck with schneider...no teemu.
